You probably already know about it. Numerous news media articles on the subject have come out in the few hours since the high court ruling was announced earlier today. Make no mistake. When the initial LGBTQ shock and the fundie celebrations die down, the Christian fundamentalists, conservative evangelicals, and Religious Right will perceive this ruling as a green light from the American judicial system to proceed with a national program of discrimination and persecution against LGBTQ Americans.
Yes, I know how narrow this ruling was and how the high court justices carefully qualified it. All I would say is this. When have Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals ever allowed simple facts to get in the way of their appalling prejudices and hatred against LGBTQ Americans?
Unfortunately, the Age of Trump marched on with a vengeance in today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. I just pray and hope this ruling did not open the first door into the following sad corner of The Twilight Zone:
My personal prediction is that Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. will soon go out of business forever as Colorado citizens choose to take their cake business to other bakers in protest against the cakeshop owner and his U.S. Supreme Court ruling. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said:
The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.
There is a higher court of justice for matters like this. It is the court of public opinion. Colorado citizens are not stupid. Nearly every extended family in Colorado has LGBTQ family members who are dearly loved by their fellow family members. Few of these families would want to see their beloved LGBTQ family members publicly hated, discriminated against, or persecuted in the realm of American commerce. Because so many families do have beloved LGBTQ members, I think Christian fundamentalist and conservative evangelical hatred, discrimination, and persecution against LGBTQ Americans was an English Fool’s errand from its very beginning.
Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals have sown whole warehouses full of seed against LGBTQ Americans, and I firmly believe that they will one day reap the whirlwind from all of the vitriolic and venomous seed they have sown. I suspect the owner of the Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. will find that out soon enough on his own—without having to read my predictions here.
