In earlier main blog posts, I taught you about the Christian Reconstructionism, Dominionism, and Theonomy heresies that threaten the Christian faith in the United States and our American democracy. Ideas common to these heresies have invaded modern Christian fundamentalism and conservative evangelicalism to various degrees. If you think Christian Reconstructionism is bad, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Have you ever heard of a secret organization known as The Fellowship or simply The Family?
I was vaguely aware of the existence of The Fellowship. However, I had never taken a close look at it until today. In fact, I had rarely ever heard anyone mention it orally, electronically, or in print. This is most likely a function of the intense secrecy and stealth practiced by this organization in doing its work, which is the seeking of big fundie changes in American society and culture. I suppose the idea is to spark these major sociocultural changes without revealing who engineered them or initiated them. Most of all, as is true of all shadow organizations, you are not going to find a whole lot of deeply incisive literature on what The Fellowship is and what it is trying to do.
Suffice it to say that I do not trust The Fellowship and their activities any farther than I can spit—just like the old movie cowboys did not trust men who wore masks. Our American culture traditionally mistrusts just about any organization that does its work secretly. The assumption—and I think rightly so—is that anyone or anything that feels compelled to do its work while hiding in the bushes—as we southern folks say— “Is up to no good.”
After all, Jesus did his New Testament work out in the open where men and women could see it. Except for a few somewhat enigmatic parables, Jesus was an out-in-the-open guy and a straight shooter. The New Testament scriptures make that crystal clear. Therefore, if The Fellowship is operating in a secret way that is the very opposite of the example Jesus offered to mankind, I think we are all justified in assuming that this organization is committed to doing some sort of evil in the name of Jesus—until The Fellowship can prove itself otherwise by coming out into the open—just as Jesus did.
I have found two written items about The Fellowship. One is a mild-mannered encyclopedia article at Wikipedia. The other is an intensely disturbing article that was printed today in the New York Post newspaper, which is a highly conservative publication. This New York Post article was written by a reputable person, Dr. Jeff Sharlet, who is an Associate Professor of journalism at Dartmouth College. For those of you who are not college saavy, Dartmouth College is one of the major Ivy League schools like Harvard University and Princeton University. You may read these two articles about The Fellowship and buy Dr. Sharlet’s 2009 book on The Fellowship by clicking on the following three safe links:
I will close by saying this. Neither Jesus nor the Christian faith is in the business of craving and gathering unto itself the power of this present world. That is the kind of thing Satan and his minions do. No Christian in his or her right mind should be admiring, walking after, or modeling his heart, mind, and behaviors on dictatorial power figures such as Vladimir Lenin, Vladimir Putin, Chairman Mao, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Donald Trump, etc. In heart and mind, Jesus is not like any of these madmen of human history. His ways are not their ways. His heart is not like their hearts. His mind is not like their minds.
Jesus plainly tells us in scripture who He is—and He has a warning about his own power, and in the face of it, the utter futility of men and women aggrandizing the power of this present world. It is a warning to the men and women who do it—and a warning to those who admire men like Joseph Stalin and follow after their ways. Listen up dear folks as Jesus and the Apostle Paul talk to you about who Jesus is—and focus on the words in blue font:
[Jesus said:] Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30).
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2:1-8).
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway[s], even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:16-20).
Did you catch that folks? Jesus said: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” That is indeed what Jesus said. The Fellowship? Chairman Mao? Adolf Hitler? Joseph Stalin? Donald J. Trump? Aggrandizing the power of this world? Really? Seriously? Give me a break!!! And take a look at this guy. He is just an ordinary angel who works for Jesus:
In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: and for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men (Matthew 28:1-4).
