Brothers, consider the time of your calling: Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were powerful; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly and despised things, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast in his presence (I Corinthians 1:27-29).
God moves in mysterious ways. The new Time Magazine cover that shows President Trump towering over a crying migrant child from Central America may very well be the silver bullet Jesus has chosen to destroy the Republican Party and the spiritually blind fundie system that supports Trump and his equally evil Republican minions. Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals fear one thing almost as much as they do the fires of Hell. They fear that their peculiar belief system and the fundie subculture that undergirds it will be annihilated—erased from the face of the Earth in this life. They have always wrongly assumed and feared that evil mankind might do this to them. Because they stand so proud and arrogant before God and mankind in their state of self-righteousness and achieved holiness, it never occurs to them that God may have his arrow of death aimed straight at them—like the sword in Psalms 37. (God despises human spiritual pride.) The Time Magazine cover may be that arrow—a veritable silver bullet sent by God to destroy evil. It is one of the most powerful and compelling images I have ever seen in a public document.
Most of you young folks out there have never seen something important. It is the image that temporarily destroyed the Republican Party with one of the biggest election landslide victories in American history. The year was 1964, and the Republican presidential candidacy it destroyed was that of Barry Goldwater from Arizona. It is well-known and even famous in the realm of American political history. It is called the Daisy Ad. Please take a look by clicking on the following safe link:
