What’s That Mr. Trump——Shithole Countries You Say?

President Donald J. Trump, widely known in Christian fundamentalist and conservative evangelical circles as God’s Anointed One, laid out his vile racism for all the world to see yesterday.  Perhaps he never heard or sang the song Jesus Loves the Little Children when he was growing up in the Queens Borough of New York City.

All the children in this song will grow up one day, and the Bible makes it crystal clear that Jesus loves all of them just as much when they become adults. Jesus loves them no matter what their native country might be.  If they are good enough for Jesus to love, I would surely think the arms of the Statue of Liberty would hug them and welcome them to this country.

In the space below, we present the song and the famous poem on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.  The song and poem are followed by a list of 13 immigrants who arrived in the United States as poor people.  Please read this list.

Jesus Loves the Little Children

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

Whether you’re rich or whether you’re poor
It matters not to Him
He remembers where you’re going
Not where you’ve been

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

If your heart is troubled
Don’t worry, don’t you fret
He knows that you have heard His call
And he won’t forget

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

All around the world tonight
His children rest assured
That He will watch and He will keep us
Safe and secure

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They’re all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
