A Formal Response to the Recent Fundie “Declaration of Dependence on God and His Holy Bible”

The Flee from Christian Fundamentalism blog has a strong and very serious message for the individual fundies and fundie entities who recently drew up the so-called Declaration of Dependence on God and His Holy Bible.  You may read about them here:

Declaration of Dependence on God and His Holy Bible

THE RESPONSE OF WE THE PEOPLE:

Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals are free to believe anything they like under the First Amendment, and they are free to exercise their faith. However, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled long ago that the rights set forth in the Bill of Rights (first 10 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution) ARE NOT ABSOLUTE. This is a matter of accepted federal law today, and it will continue to be. The basic principle in this is clear. A Christian’s right to religious liberty ends when that liberty has the effect of denying the legitimate rights and liberties of another citizen.

Here at the Flee from Christian Fundamentalism blog, we have no problem with dependence on God as long as that dependence is really and truly a dependence on the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Father, Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit).

Dependence on the Holy Bible is quite another matter that presents numerous problems. What these fundies are really saying is dependence on “my exclusive fundie understanding” of the Bible. A ship load of Biblical scholars, theologians, saints, and ministers of the gospel who take the Bible seriously will tell you there are many different interpretations and understandings of the Bible that have existed over the past 2,000 years and that exist even today within the universal church. In other words, there are many different, honest, and legitimate ways of looking at the Bible. This is one reason why about 60,000 different Christian denominations exist all around the world. We even have disagreements among the saints in the words of the Bible.  In essence, when the fundies say “dependence on the Holy Bible,” they are really demanding the whole Christian world must fall on its knees and assent to their exclusive understanding of the Bible—and theirs alone.  Good luck on that!!!  It has not happened in the past 2,000 years of the church, and it is unlikely to ever happen here on Earth. Moreover, Christian fundamentalist preachers get into vicious dogfights among themselves with regard to the meanings of passages in the Bible and how those passages should affect human behavior. From my own perspective, I tend to give it the Possum Test. If a Biblical understanding is coming from Homer “Big Tater” Buford down at the Possum Hollow Baptist Church or any person who would be at home in that church, that understanding is immediately thrown under suspicion.  Being a lifetime scholar who thinks deeply about such matters, I feel much more comfortable with understandings coming from places like the divinity schools at Oxford University, Duke University, Vanderbilt University, etc.

1) WE THE PEOPLE who are not Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals (including many mainline Christian churches and their members) are never going to allow you fundies to take over the government of the United States at any level (federal, state, or local) and impose your fundie beliefs on us through government authority, policies, laws, regulations, mandates, or police actions. We do not accept your belief that you are the only “true” Christians in this world and your belief that this gives you a divine right to rule over us here on the Earth. We shall never bend a knee to your human authoritarianism and tyranny under any circumstances whatsoever. In saying this, those of us who are mainline Christians are in no way opposed to God the Father, Jesus Christ, or the Holy Spirit as we understand them. (We gladly bend both our knees before them.)  Rather, we are opposed to Christian fundamentalism, conservative evangelicalism, and those individual people who follow them. We are opposed to the all too human YOU. From this moment forward, we shall fight you with every last ounce of energy, every last bit of strength, and every last breath we have—and whatever more God chooses to give us. We shall never give up, and we shall never give in to your demands. We shall remain forever free of your demands and influence—and we shall lay down even our own lives to protect ourselves and our neighbors from the harm Christian fundamentalism and conservative evangelicalism do to ordinary people and our nation.

2) WE THE PEOPLE who are not Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals (including many mainline Christian churches and their members) are never going to allow you to put an end to abortion or put an end to LGBTQ civil rights in the United States. We shall never allow you to use the law and demands for your religious freedom as a clever tool to persecute members of the LGBTQ community in this country and drive them back into their closets. As far as we are concerned, LGBTQ people are our neighbors, just as Jesus said, and they deserve to be treated well and loved well as our neighbors. They are out of their closets forever; and it is going to stay that way. From this moment forward, we shall fight you fundies with every last ounce of energy, every last bit of strength, and every last breath we have—and whatever more God chooses to give us. We shall never give up, and we shall never give in to your demands. We shall remain forever free of your demands and influence—and we shall lay down even our own lives to protect ourselves and our neighbors from the great harm Christian fundamentalism and conservative evangelicalism do to ordinary people and our nation.

3) WE THE PEOPLE who are not Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals (including many mainline Christian churches and their members) are giving you Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals fair warning. No law, regulation, or court ruling in the United States (at any level) requires an American citizen to do business with a Christian fundamentalist or conservative evangelical business or business owner that discriminates against selected customers because they are deemed to be some sort of objectionable sinner. The American business community is coming down like a rain of  lead bricks on the State of North Carolina because of its LGBTQ discrimination laws like SB2. As many other American businesses are already doing, our families shall refuse to do business with any and all Christian fundamentalist and conservative evangelical businessmen and merchants who use their businesses as tools for discrimination and persecution of people they deem to be sinners—and cynically do it in the name of their own religious freedom. As individual people and families, we shall exercise our American rights to buy our supplies and obtain our services from your competitors instead—and we shall continue to do so until you either end your persecution and discrimination against your neighbors—or you go out of business. From this moment forward, we shall fight you with every last ounce of energy, every last bit of strength, and every last breath we have—and whatever else God chooses to give us. We shall never give up, and we shall never give in  to your demands. We shall remain forever free of your demands and influence—and we shall lay down even our own lives to protect ourselves and our neighbors from the great harm Christian fundamentalism and conservative evangelicalism do to ordinary people, our nation, and the reputation of the universal church of connected hearts who serve Jesus—and Jesus alone.

4) WE THE PEOPLE (including many mainline Christian churches and their members) believe the time Christian fundamentalism and conservative evangelism have long feared and dreaded has finally arrived today…that special moment of finality and defeat when Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals can join with one voice and admit in their own lamentations: “FOR US—ALL IS NOW LOST.”  We call upon Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals throughout the United States to fall on their knees before God and repent of the evil and heretical Christian fundamentalist belief system created by fallible men (not God) here in the United States just 100 years ago and repent of the foundational, Satanic lie that Christian fundamentalism is original, first century, Orthodox Christianity—a lie that is not supported by the actual 2,000-year history of the universal church of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. We urge you to accept the self-evident reality that your enormous string of losses and failures in the so-called culture wars over the past 150 years are a clearly stated  and deafening message from God to YOU fundies—a message you have failed to listen to and heed.  This message is that God never was on your side, He is not on your side now, and He never will be on your side unless you repent of your sinful and false Christian fundamentalist beliefs and abandon them forever. The shadow of death is already upon your churches—and you know it. If they are not reformed to align with the full mind, heart, sayings, and deeds of Jesus Christ in the New Testament, they shall surely die.
