Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals are indeed on the run, as we have said here many times on this blog. However, they continue to be absolutely clueless about why they are on the run—spouting the same old worn out, false pablum about them being the few remaining centers of holiness and righteousness in a world drowning in its sins. One of these days, they might wake up to the reality that the three things most people see in them and their churches are their: (1) poor understanding of the Holy Bible; (2) ignorance of 2,000 years of worldwide church history; and (3) abandonment of the person, sayings, and doings of Jesus Christ. Jesus put it to them best in the New Testament when he said:
These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (Matthew 15:8)
The Associated Press has just published a really good article concerning just how weak and marginalized the Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals are feeling today. Please give it a close read by clicking on the following link:
Listen up fundies and conservative evangelicals—and listen up good!!! Your own children are leaving you and leaving your churches because they do not see the Jesus of the New Testament in you and in your lives. They are also leaving because you refuse to take them seriously and listen to their concerns. Roman Catholics and mainline Protestants are opposed to you because they do not see Jesus in you and in your lives. Members of the American public are abandoning you because they do not see Jesus in you and in your lives. Indeed, you have gone so far off the deep end that the following four commands uttered by Jesus may very well be the four most ignored and hated sets of words in all of Christian fundamentalism and conservative evangelicalism:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. (Mark 12:30-31)
Do unto others as you would have them do to you. (Matthew 7:12)
Love your neighbor as yourself. (Mark 12:31)
Love each other in the same way I have loved you. (John 15:12)
When people look at you and your churches, they do not see Jesus at all. They see two words standing in the place where Jesus should be standing: HATRED and IGNORANCE. They are correct about both, and it is repulsive to them. You cannot salve this wound with John 15:18 and by pouting about imaginary persecution. Your detractors are not rejecting Jesus of Nazareth. They are rejecting you all-too-human and incredibly fallible fundies and the mockery you have made of the red words of Jesus in the New Testament through your speech, your writings, and your actions in life. As one of my acquaintances so aptly put it nearly a decade ago:
Christian fundamentalism and conservative evangelicalism are religious belief systems from which nearly all real LOVE has been drained away.
Just like the Emperor with No Clothes, you have become blind to your own true condition, and you have become your own worst enemy. With your words and deeds, you tighten the hangman’s noose around the necks of your “isms” just a little bit more with each passing day, and the end state will be the eventual extinction of your fundie belief system. God sees it. Jesus sees it. The Holy Spirit sees it. Nonfundie Christians see it. Even the unregenerated man on the street sees it.
Jesus is in the process of reforming his universal church for the 21st century. As part of this reformation, He is sweeping your 100-year-old, man-made fundie belief system into the ash bin of history where it belongs—and you are too blind and too stupid to even recognize it.
