Jerry Falwell, Jr. Has Spoken

Nearly everyone in American Christendom has been asking this question, and no halfway certain and sensible answer came to me until yesterday on Fox News with Greta van Susteren.  Here is the key question:

Why are so many Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals supporting Donald Trump for President of the United States, even though he has never shown credible signs of being any sort of ” true” Christian?

Yesterday, Greta interviewed Jerry Falwell, Jr., a vocal public supporter of the Donald Trump campaign.  I do not have the exact words, but here is my best paraphrasing of what I heard Falwell say:

The biggest issue facing us right now is the survival of our country under its current economic distress and the threats from enemies abroad.  We have to secure our country first or social issues like abortion and gay marriage will be moot points.  We need to elect Donald Trump to secure our nation first. When that is all done and our nation is secure again, then we can take the time necessary to address social issues such as abortion and gay marriage.

There you are folks!!!  You have your answer now. The Christian fundamentalists and conservative evangelicals who have cried loudly for decades that a Christian must vote their moral values (and preferably vote for a Christian candidate who espouses those values) say that none of that is of prime importance now. Instead, vote now for a nonChristian  messiah candidate who espouses few, if any, of those traditional fundie values in his own life—but he will save our nation from its weak economy, its foreign enemies, and the dreaded “least of these” who enter our country from Mexico and Central America—and those are the most important things right now.  Just like I have said on other occasions, when the more important twin gods of money and personal safety enter the picture, traditional fundie moral values are thrown out into the street to fend for themselves.
